Walking is commonly recommended for its health benefits. But recommendations vary depending on the source. How many steps do you actually need to take to see the benefits? A review article has just answered this question...

The recommendations for physical activity are generally ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“๐ŸŽ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ ๐ฐ๐ž๐ž๐ค ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฆ๐จ๐๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐ฉ๐ก๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ, or 75 minutes of ๐ก๐ข๐ ๐ก-๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ physical activity. The number of steps taken per day is easy to measure, especially since the advent of sports performance measurement devices ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐œ๐ก ๐š๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ฐ๐š๐ญ๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ฌ. A systematic review published in ๐ฟ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘๐‘’๐‘ก ๐‘ƒ๐‘ข๐‘๐‘™๐‘–๐‘ ๐ป๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘กโ„Ž compiled the results of 57 articles and examined the link between the ๐ง๐ฎ๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ฉ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐š๐ค๐ž๐ง ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ ๐๐š๐ฒ and various health parameters.

The authors concluded that walking ๐Ÿ•,๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ฉ๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ ๐๐š๐ฒ ๐ซ๐ž๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ค ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ก ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐œ๐š๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ by 47% compared to walking 2,000 steps per day. Looking at the causes of death in detail, walking 7,000 steps reduced the risk of ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐๐ข๐จ๐ฏ๐š๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐š๐ซ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ž by 25%, the risk of dying from ๐œ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ซ by 37% and the risk of ๐๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐š by 38%. Walking more than 7,000 steps further reduced these figures, but only minimally. Even walking ๐Ÿ’,๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ฉ๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ ๐๐š๐ฒ ๐ซ๐ž๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ค ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ก ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐œ๐š๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ.

Therefore, even though the goal of 10,000 steps per day is often mentioned, 7,000 steps is a more ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐œ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐š๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ž๐ฏ๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐ ๐จ๐š๐ฅ, with ๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง๐ข๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐œ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐›๐ž๐ง๐ž๐Ÿ๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ.
