Stress during pregnancy and tooth eruption
In most children, between ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ ๐ญ๐๐๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐๐๐ซ ๐๐ญ ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ก๐ฌ. Disturbances in tooth eruption (early or delayed) can cause dental problems throughout life. The development of baby teeth ๐๐๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐. A recent study published in the journal ๐น๐๐๐๐ก๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ป๐๐๐๐กโ investigated the link between ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ง๐๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ, stress-related hormones, and ๐๐๐๐ฒ ๐ญ๐จ๐จ๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง. The hormones studied were cortisol, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, triiodothyronine, and thyroxine.
A total of 142 mother-child pairs were studied. At 6 months, 15.2% of children had at least one tooth erupted, and 25% had all 20 baby teeth at 24 months. Cortisol, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, and triiodothyronine levels were ๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง๐ข๐๐ข๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ญ๐๐ with the number of teeth that had erupted at 6 months. In patients who had ๐ก๐ข๐ ๐ก ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ ๐ฅ๐๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ ๐ง๐๐ง๐๐ฒ, children had an average of ๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐ญ๐๐๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ญ ๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ก๐ฌ than children of mothers who had low cortisol levels.
๐๐ซ๐๐ง๐๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ therefore appears to have an effect on tooth eruption in the child. However, cortisol probably interacts with a ๐ง๐ฎ๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ ๐จ๐ ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐๐๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ that regulate tooth eruption, such as genetic factors, diet, living conditions, and the everyday environment in which the infant grows up.
