A new contraceptive for men

23/05/2019

The range of contraceptives available to men could soon include a male pill, currently called "11-beta-MNTD”.

The pill’s efficacy has been tested in a Phase-1 clinical trial by researchers from the University of Washington School of Medicine and the Los Angeles Biomed Research Institute. In total, 40 healthy young men participated in the trial.

The first results show that the pill proved safe and considerably reduced the production of the two hormones involved in producing spermatozoids. What’s more, it does not hamper the libido, as opposed to the female contraceptive pill.

Still, it is not without side effects, with tiredness, headaches and acne observed in some subjects. The next step will see the pill tested by sexually-active couples.
