Cardiovascular disease and gender inequality

Cardiovascular diseases are widespread in the general population. However, men and women are not equally affected by these diseases. And contrary to popular belief, women are actually the most vulnerable!

According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the Among these, ๐ก๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ญ ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐š๐œ๐ค๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ค๐ž๐ฌ are the deadliest (accounting for about 85% of deaths). When thinking of the typical heart attack patient, we tend to picture a man who is overweight, a smoker, a regular drinker, or someone under stress. Well, surprisingly, heart attacks are the ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐œ๐š๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ก ๐š๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐  ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง, whereas cancer holds that position among men. Furthermore, it is estimated that ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ”% ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง ๐๐ข๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐๐ข๐จ๐ฏ๐š๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐š๐ซ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ž, compared to 46% of men.

๐’๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐Ÿ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ have been cited to explain this disparity between men and women. Anatomically, womenโ€™s coronary arteries are ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ซ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฎ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ, which can increase the likelihood of complications. Furthermore, women tend to ๐๐จ๐ฐ๐ง๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ฒ ๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฉ๐š๐ข๐ง because they have experienced severe pain at some point in their lives. A 2024 study also showed that womenโ€™s pain was ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐›๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฆ๐ž๐๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ. Finally, women also tend to adhere less strictly to cardiac rehabilitation, which aims to prevent recurrence, as they often ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ณ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ข๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐š๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ž๐ฌโ€™ ๐ก๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก over their own.

Furthermore, in addition to risk factors specific to them, it appears that women are ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ง ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง ๐ญ๐จ ๐œ๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐œ ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ค ๐Ÿ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ, such as ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐จ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ . The risk of a heart attack due to smoking is ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ% ๐ก๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐ข๐ง ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง than in men. Prevention efforts must therefore be significantly strengthened in this population.
