Eating better to guard against gout

09/01/2018

Gout is characterized by an inflammation of the joints caused by significant buildup of uric acid. This acid results from the breakdown of the nuclei of cells found in certain foods, particularly animal products.

People suffering from gout are typically woken up in the middle of the night by sharp sudden pain, often in the big toe. The joint typically feels hot, looks red and swollen, and hurts when pressed.
By eating a healthy, varied diet, however, you can protect yourself against gout. All you need to do is follow these steps:

1) Avoid alcohol, as it stimulates the production of uric acid. Most patients are well aware that gout episodes often follow excessive consumption of alcohol.

2) Be wary of certain foods that are likely to increase blood uric acid levels, such as offal, herring, anchovies, seafood, red meat, and game.

3)Drink at least 1 to 2 litres of water a day, preferably one with a basic pH, like Vichy mineral water.
