How many cups of coffee is OK per day?

16/04/2019

Coffee has been proven beneficial for the health, but is that true for everyone? And if so, how much is OK? Over 150 studies were published on this very topic in 2018, from which we’ve gleaned some more concrete advice.

The beneficial effects of coffee are well and truly real! This bean has great antioxidant effects for the cardiovascular system. A recent study conducted by researchers of Dusseldorf University tells us more, in particular about how many cups are recommended.

So what is the optimal amount? According to the authors of this analysis, published in Plos Biology, four cups a day is the recommended number in order to get the most from coffee’s beneficial properties. That doesn’t mean that coffee can replace physical activity, though, and you still need a healthy, varied diet.

There are some that should be careful though, particularly pregnant women who can suffer anxiety, palpitations, and headaches after drinking coffee. Those prone to having trouble sleeping, too, should think twice, as caffeine stimulates the nervous system and counteracts the effects of melatonin, potentially exacerbating their problems.
