Link between dementia and insomnia
Insomnia is a condition with ๐๐จ๐ญ๐ก ๐ง๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐ฌ. It is defined by an ๐ข๐ง๐ฏ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐๐๐ฉ ๐๐๐๐ข๐๐ข๐ญ, in terms of either quantity or quality. Depending on the individual, it can manifest as difficulty falling asleep, waking up during the night, and/or waking up too early. Furthermore, insomnia ๐ญ๐๐ง๐๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ข๐ง๐๐ซ๐๐๐ฌ๐ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ ๐, as aging is often associated with a decline in sleep quality. This condition impairs quality of life, exacerbates associated illnesses, leads to absences from work, and increases the risk of traffic or workplace accidents. It is also a ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ค ๐๐๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐.
This study, recently published in ๐โ๐ ๐ฝ๐๐ข๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐ก๐๐๐๐๐ฆ, found that the ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐๐ญ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐จ๐ฆ๐ง๐ข๐ (all types combined) was ๐๐.๐%, and this figure was slightly higher among women (13.1%). The article estimated that by 2022, approximately 449,069 cases of dementia could have been prevented if insomnia had been effectively managed and treated.
Consequently, addressing patientsโ insomnia could ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ข๐ซ ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ค ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐. In addition to the link with insomnia, studies have also identified an association between a ๐ฐ๐๐๐ค ๐ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ก๐๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ฆ (the system that clears toxins from the brain during sleep) and an increased risk of dementia, as well as an increased risk of dementia and stroke in ๐ฉ๐๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ฌ๐๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐๐๐ฉ ๐๐ฉ๐ง๐๐ ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ง๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐.
