The companies making money out of DNA tests

19/03/2019

In the United States, genetic analysis kits are being found less and less in labs and more on supermarket shelves or under the Christmas tree.

Though DNA tests are subject to prescription laws in France, they are for sale on the open market in the States. Since 2016, their use has been democratized so much that today more than 10 million Americans have already had their genes sequenced.

The distributors of these tests enable any Tom, Dick or Harry to discover their ethnic origins, as well as any risks they have of contracting certain diseases, and all for the small sum of 60 euros.

Needless to say, this new amassing of sensitive data is open to all kinds of abuse, and it will not be easy to protect users, with pharmaceutical laboratories the first in line to profit.
