The never ending debate on daylight saving time

27/10/2018

The EU Commission proposes to end the practice of adjusting clocks by an hour in spring and autumn after a survey revealed most European citizens opposed to it.

Several studies cited by the Commission in the EU report demonstrated health impacts from the
clock changes, such as sleeping disturbances, shorther sleeping tim, daytime fatigue, anxiety, or
nervousness. Infants and small children appear particularly affected by the clock-changing.

“Clock-changing must stop”, said Mr. Junker in his statement. Under the proposals announced by Mr.
Juncker in his State of the Union Address, the last mandatary change to summertime would occur on
Sunday, 31 March 2019. After this, individual member states who wish to permanently switch back
to wintertime could make one final clock change at the end of October next year. This decision would
be made by April 2019.
