Blue light officially labelled harmful

20/06/2019

Back in 2010, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (Anses) had already reported on the dangers of blue light for the retina.

The agency has now published an update on their recommendations based on an analysis of 600 scientific publications. So what’s the verdict? The latest studies confirm that blue light reduces visual acuity and increases age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Moreover, exposure just before going to bed has been found to disrupt circadian sleep rhythms.

To protect yourself against these risks, it is thus recommended to spend as little time as possible looking at the screens of smartphones, computers and tablets, as well as avoiding even more aggressive light sources such as decorative LEDs or torches.

Anses also underlines that "the protective devices sold to the public, such as treated glass, protective glasses or specifically-designed screens, offer highly variable results in terms of reducing the effects of blue light on the retina.”
