Junk food significantly increases the risk of cancer

07/01/2019

In a large observational study involving more than 470 000 Europeans, experts have clearly demonstrated that the regular consumption of junk food significantly increases the risk of developing cancer.

This large observational study, conducted in more than 10 European countries, recruited more than
470 000 participants, who were followed-up on for 15 years on average. All participants were invited
to fill in a diet questionnaire. To this end, the food products consumed were put into five categories,
depending on their nutritional quality, similar to the five-color NutriScore system, which has been in
use since the end of 2017.

Analysis of the study data, recently published online in PLOS Medicine, has clearly shown that regular
consumption of junk food significantly increases the risk of cancer. The association between junk
food and cancer development was particularly relevant for breast cancer in women and prostate
cancer in men, as well as for colorectal cancer and pancreatic cancer in both genders.
