NutriScore label to appear on more supermarket products

21/02/2019

The NutriScore label with its five colors, launched at the end of 2017 in France, is to be used on more products, not only in France, but also in many other European countries, although its usage is not yet mandatory.

The concept is quite simple. Food products are classified into five major categories, depending on their nutritional quality, with each color representing a certain quality level, from dark green to dark orange. A food product with the dark green NutriScore label is a product of optimal nutritional quality, whereas a food product with a dark orange label is a food product of poor quality. Its consumption should be avoided whenever possible.

French supermarkets, such as Auchan, Leclerc, and Intermarché, are already using this labeling for some of their products. The same applies to brands such as Danone and Fleury-Michan. It is anticipated that in 2019, this five-color labeling system will become much more widespread.
